Seemingly the most scaring disease in the Contemporary Society, AIDS
undoubtedly considered recent comparing with Tuberculosis, to say
the least. AIDS is short for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the system that fights diseases.
Acquired means that you can get infected And Syndrome means an array
of health problems, which make up a disease. Yet, no cure found for
AIDS and people still get infected worldwide. The core problem lays
in Africa, where the majority of population lives under the poverty
line without access to medical aid.
Contact with bodily fluids in which HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
is present infects people. When this virus, penetrates the organism,
chooses cells of the immunologic system, responsible for warding off
diseases. After that, defense cells start dying rendering the organism
without means to fight disease.
In men, the virus is found in blood, or in seminal liquid that is
expelled before ejaculation and in sperm. In women, HIV is also found
in the vaginal secretions, in menstruation and in breast milk. During
pregnancy and by breast-feeding, women can transmit the HIV virus
to newly borns. The infected women must avoid t pregnancy, due to
the highly possibility of infecting the fetus.
A person contaminated with the HIV is called soropositive. Being
HIV-positive, or having HIV, is not the same as having AIDS. But this
person can contaminate other people. Many HIV-positive don't get sick
for many years to come. The incubation period of the virus in the
organism takes a long time. Besides, it’s cornerstone to address that
bacterium or viruses virtually harmless to humans can let HIV+ bed
ridden. These are so called "opportunistic infections" resulting in
death of an infected individual.
The HIV virus is not transmitted:
- Through hugs, kisses, sneezes, coughs, shaking hands;
- On public seats, bugs bites, sinks, swimming pools, saunas, buses,
elevators;
- Sleeping in the same bedroom, on the same bed, dressing the same
clothes or using the same sheets;
- Working in the same environment, attending the same theater room,
movies, class or restaurant;
- Donating blood, using discardable material.
